Role of a Naval Architect

Naval Architect is an Architect as well as an Engineer who understands a ship, inside out and has the skills and expertise in construction, designing, building and repairing of the ships. Since the need to develop a further more advanced ships is always there, the role of a Naval Architect becomes quite important. Although not many institutions offer this course but with the need for innovation and research in this sector, it becomes very important to have qualified Naval Architects available for the role. With more and more commercialization taking place in this sector, the demand for Naval Architects have increased quite significantly.

Boats, high speed crafts, ships which include cargo ships, ferries, tankers, warships and passenger liners, submarines, hover crafts, oil rigs as well as structures related to them are all designed by a Naval Architect. In addition to it, they also have the skillset to design and build installations like an offshore drilling platform. After pursuing B. Tech in Naval Architecture, the graduates can go for a M. Tech in Naval Architecture followed by Ph.D. and Research Programs. Skillset like this can find a job easily in the construction yards in India, Korea, Japan etc.

Career Growth for a Naval Architect

A Naval Architect has quite a good number of opportunities and roles to take up after graduating which are as follows:-

After graduating as a Naval Architect, he or she can work in a ship building company as an Architect, as a Coastguard, can join Navy. Apart from this, classification societies, shipyards as well as dockyards are some other avenues where a Naval Architect can find an employment A Naval architect can also work in oil rig centers, oceanography centers and naval centers

After serving as a Fourth Engineer for 12 months on a ship, he becomes eligible to appear for the Class II exam. Before he can appear for the exam, he has to attend a 4 months course. On clearing the exam successfully, the Fourth Engineer gets promoted as a Second Engineer and becomes eligible for earning nearly 5700 USD/ month

As a Naval Architect if you have an interest in construction and designing then you can be appointed as a manager of the whole shipyard with the responsibilities of production, planning and managing the operations of ship build . A Naval Architect can also take up a role of a academician to teach in educational institutes
